"Historical and Prestigious" The Rochester Hills area began in 1817 when early settlers came here because of the abundance of timber - timber from which this area was built. The rivers in the area supplied power for mills, which produced flour, cornmeal, grist, and feed. This industry brought railroads, which brought more industries and more people. Many remnants from this past are preserved in buildings of varying architectural design, including Early Victorian farmhouse, Queen Anne Victorian, Victorian Vernacular and Greek Revival, along with a few others. Rochester Hills has since evolved into one of the more prestigious suburbs in the Detroit metropolitan area. The city is located in the east central area of Oakland County and encompasses 32.2 square miles. Many industries have corporate headquarters located in the city, including: warehousing and distribution, computer technology, electronic research, tool and die, plastic injection molding and structural engineering. The residents of the community are predominantly professional and skilled workers.
Rochester Hills is serviced by several major transportation routes, including I-75, I-696, M-59, M-53 (Van Dyke Freeway), and Woodward Avenue. Downtown Detroit is about 25 minutes south, with numerous nearby suburbs that include Oakland Township, Washington Township, Shelby Township, Sterling Heights, Auburn Hills and the city of Troy.
